# Add Image Captions and Credits the Right Way

 ##

Captions and credits help users understand what they’re seeing and attribute rights holders appropriately. Confusing them with alt text can cause accessibility issues.

## Why it matters

**Clarity:** Captions give all visitors context.

**Governance:** Credits ensure compliance with policies and rights when appropriate.

**Accessibility:** Alt text serves a different purpose than captions.

## How to do it

- Write **alt text** for accessibility; keep it short and descriptive.
- Use **captions** for context or storytelling.
- Add **credits** consistently: “Photo: \[Name\]” at the end of the caption or as text below.

## Accessibility tip

Do not duplicate captions in alt text. Screen readers should get concise, unique descriptions.
