When events span multiple topics, audiences, or formats, grouping them visually helps users understand what’s available and where to start. While HarvardSites doesn’t support user-controlled filtering, you can still guide visitors by manually organizing content into columns, each with a clear label and purpose.

The Columns component makes it easy to present 2–3 categorized groups side-by-side or stacked on mobile, helping users scan and choose based on their interests.

##  Using the Columns Component in Your Pages 

### Best for

Creating visual groupings of events by topic, audience, or type, within the same section of a page.

### Component used

### What It does

Lets you place content side-by-side in separate blocks, each with its own heading and optional embedded components (like Event Lists, CTA Links, or Text). Columns automatically stack vertically on mobile devices.



 

##  Setup tips 

- Use **clear headings** for each column (e.g., “Student Events,” “Workshops,” “For Faculty”)
- Keep embedded content simple, like 2–3 items per column
- Use **Section Headings** to introduce the overall grouping
- Keep text and event cards within each column concise to avoid imbalance
- On mobile, columns will stack, place the most universally relevant content first



 

##  Pros & cons 

### Added benefits

- Makes long event pages easier to scan and digest
- Gives content authors full control over layout and grouping
- Helps reinforce thematic or role-based segmentation without needing filters

### Potential drawbacks

- Not interactive, users can’t switch between views or toggle categories
- Layout may appear uneven if columns contain very different amounts of content
- Content needs to be manually placed, taxonomy tags don’t automatically populate these columns.
