 

#  Why Design Systems Need Guardrails 

 





Good design systems don't exist to reduce creativity, but to make common design decisions easier. When common design problems have shared solutions, content creators can spend less time reinventing design patterns and more time focusing on the message they want to communicate. This balance between consistency and flexibility is one of the defining characteristics of a successful design system.

Good design systems don't exist to reduce creativity, but to make common design decisions easier. When common design problems have shared solutions, content creators can spend less time reinventing design patterns and more time focusing on the message they want to communicate. This balance between consistency and flexibility is one of the defining characteristics of a successful design system.

The HarvardSites Design System exists for the same reason. Dozens of schools and units, each with their own site builders and their own priorities, are drawing from one shared set of components and patterns. That's only possible because the system provides a common foundation everyone can build on, rather than asking every school to solve the same design and accessibility problems on its own.

## Consistency creates familiarity

People visit websites to accomplish a task, not to learn a new interface. When a site visitor is reading research, applying to a program, or looking for an event, familiar navigation, predictable interactions, and consistent layouts help them focus on the content rather than the interface.

That's why design systems standardize things like buttons, spacing, layouts, typography, and navigation. These patterns become familiar over time, reducing cognitive effort and making websites easier to use.

## Flexibility still matters

Consistency doesn't mean every website should look the same. A design system should provide enough flexibility for organizations to communicate their own identity while preserving the patterns users rely on.

Within the HarvardSites Design System, schools can express their identity through theme variations, imagery, color palettes, typography choices, and content while using the same accessible components and interaction patterns. The underlying experience remains familiar even though the visual expression changes.

This approach allows websites to feel distinctive without becoming inconsistent.

## Guardrails support better decisions

The standards within a design system are sometimes described as guardrails.Rather than limiting creativity, guardrails protect the parts of an experience that have the greatest impact on usability for site visitors. A guardrail might be a required heading field, a limited set of color combinations, consistent link styling, predictable focus order, or guidance about when a Hero component should be used. Individually, these look like small rules. Together, they prevent the kinds of problems that are hardest to catch after a page is already built.

Accessibility requirements, interaction patterns, spacing, and component behavior are based on established design practices, accessibility guidance, and user research. Keeping these elements consistent helps create experiences that work well for a broad range of users while reducing the need for every project to solve the same problems independently.

It also helps to trace a guardrail back to why it matters. A required heading field exists so that a page has a clear, navigable structure, not just visual headings that look right but mean nothing to a screen reader. That matters because it lets a visitor using assistive technology jump straight to the section they need instead of listening through an entire page. Framed that way, a guardrail isn't a design preference. It's a decision that's already been made in service of a specific outcome, so no one has to make it again under time pressure.

Site owners can be confident that a new page won't introduce an accessibility violation, a redesign won't need to relitigate decisions other teams have already made, and that content teams can publish quickly without waiting on central review for every change.

## Guardrails as a form of governance

Design system guardrails are also where web governance becomes tangible. Most institutions don't ask for "governance" directly. They ask why the site looks different depending on which office built the page, why an accessibility complaint took multiple departments to resolve, or why a routine content update took weeks during a busy admissions cycle. Those are governance problems, even if they’re not automatically recognized by that term.

A design system's guardrails address several of the same outcomes governance is meant to deliver:

- **Brand consistency across departments.** Shared components and patterns mean a prospective student moving between a school site and a central administration site encounters one institution, not a set of independent decisions.
- **Faster, safer content updates.** When guardrails already handle spacing, accessibility, and layout, contributors can publish quickly during an admissions deadline or a campus emergency without needing central review to catch preventable mistakes.
- **Reduced legal and accessibility risk.** Because accessible components and interaction patterns are built into the system rather than decided project by project, sites accumulate fewer compliance gaps over time.
- **Contributor confidence.** Editors can publish knowing the guardrails already protect them from the errors that cause the most visible problems, which is part of what drives adoption of a system rather than workarounds.
- **Better visibility in AI-powered search.** Consistent, well-structured content is also easier for AI systems to interpret and recommend, which matters as prospective students increasingly research schools through tools like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews in search results.

## Designed to evolve

Guardrails are not fixed. As design practices evolve and new research becomes available, the design system evolves with them.

Accessibility testing, usability studies, analytics, and feedback from site builders and site visitors all help shape future improvements. Research has led to refinements ranging from more flexible [Hero component](https://designsystem.harvardsites.harvard.edu/hero) layouts to improvements in search and filtering interactions. Each improvement strengthens the shared system while benefiting every site that uses it.

This is also why continued investment in a design system matters, not just its initial build. When contributors run into the same layout problem across multiple sites, each individual workaround is a small brand and accessibility risk that accumulates over time. Maintaining and evolving the guardrails is what keeps that risk from adding up.

## Shared foundations, better experiences

A design system works best when it provides consistency where users benefit from it most and flexibility where organizations need it most. That balance creates experiences that are easier to use, maintain, and evolve over time.
