Add Image Captions and Credits the Right Way
Captions and credits help users understand what they’re seeing and attribute rights holders appropriately. Confusing them with alt text can cause accessibility issues.
Why it matters
Clarity: Captions give all visitors context.
Governance: Credits ensure compliance with policies and rights when appropriate.
Accessibility: Alt text serves a different purpose than captions.
How to do it
- Write alt text for accessibility; keep it short and descriptive.
- Use captions for context or storytelling.
- Add credits consistently: “Photo: [Name]” at the end of the caption or as text below.
Accessibility tip
Do not duplicate captions in alt text. Screen readers should get concise, unique descriptions.
